As part of Zambia’s newly launched 10-year strategic plan for the energy sector, the Kafue Gorge Lower plant has been identified as a cornerstone asset. The plan highlights KGL’s 750 MW capacity as critical for ensuring national energy security, enhancing export potential, and serving as a hub for innovation in hydropower and downstream solar integration. (Note: this builds on prior reporting but aligns with KGL being listed among key strategic projects by ZESCO. )
The strategic plan includes intentions to improve transmission infrastructure to better evacuate power generated at KGL, increase community linkages (for example, providing electricity to peripheral areas), and explore hybrid power / solar projects downstream of the hydropower facilities.
